Peptide Therapy After the New HHS Policy: What Changed and What It Means for You

HHS just changed the rules for six popular peptides, including BPC-157. Here is what it means, what it doesn’t, and how to approach peptide therapy safely.

Peptide therapy NYC at The Bodie Co wellness clinic

If peptides have been all over your feed this week, there’s a reason. At the end of October, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced a new policy on six peptides people have been asking about for years, BPC-157 and TB-500 among them. The headlines ranged from “peptides are legal now” to “doctors say the science isn’t there yet.” Both miss part of the picture, and if you’re considering peptide therapy NYC clinics now offer, the details matter.

Here is what actually changed, what it doesn’t change, and how to think about peptide therapy in NYC if you’re curious.

What HHS announced

HHS issued an enforcement discretion policy for six peptides: BPC-157, TB-500, epitalon, semax, KPV and MOTS-c. In plain terms, the government said it does not plan to take action against licensed pharmacies and physicians that compound these peptides, as long as they meet a list of conditions, while the FDA works on a formal rule (AJMC, Drug Topics).

A few details matter:

  • It is interim. The policy covers the period while the FDA completes rulemaking. It can change.
  • It is not an approval. None of these six peptides is FDA-approved as a drug. The policy is about enforcement, not about proving they work (AJMC).
  • It has conditions. Reporting on the policy notes, for example, that each product must contain a single peptide, so blends are not covered (analysis).

What the evidence says so far

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as signaling molecules in the body. Different peptides are studied for different things: tissue repair, inflammation, growth hormone release, sleep.

The honest answer is that research varies a lot from peptide to peptide. For some, such as BPC-157, much of the published research comes from animal and laboratory studies, and large human trials are limited (literature review). That’s why some physicians quoted this week welcomed easier access while warning that the science is still catching up. Reports of people buying peptides from unregulated online sources and injecting them without supervision have added to the concern.

What this means for you: the policy may make legitimate, pharmacy-compounded peptides easier for clinicians to prescribe. It doesn’t make peptides from the internet safe, and it doesn’t replace a medical evaluation.

Peptide therapy NYC: how it works at The Bodie Co

At The Bodie Co, peptide therapy is a medical treatment that requires a consultation. Peptides are prescribed and supervised by our clinical team. Nothing starts until your health history and goals have been reviewed.

  • Consultation: about 30 minutes, with a full review of your health history and what you want to work on.
  • A personalized protocol: different peptides target different systems. Your provider designs a protocol matched to your goals rather than a one-size stack.
  • Administration: most peptides are given by subcutaneous self-injection, similar to insulin. We provide training and support. Some are available as oral or topical formulations.
  • Ongoing check-ins: protocols are supervised over time, not handed over and forgotten.

Clients typically come to us for support with body composition, muscle recovery, sleep and energy, healthy aging, inflammation and recovery from injury, and focus. Many clients notice changes in sleep and energy within a few weeks; changes in body composition and recovery usually take longer, often 6–8 weeks or more. Results vary from person to person.

Who it is and is not for

Peptide therapy tends to suit people who want a supervised, goal-specific plan and are comfortable with regular check-ins, from athletes and busy professionals to people entering perimenopause or andropause who want systemic support.

It isn’t a fit for everyone. Your provider will consider your medical history, medications and goals, and may advise against a protocol or suggest a different approach. Side effects can include reactions at the injection site and others specific to each peptide. Your provider will go through these with you before you decide.

Peptides also work well alongside other treatments. Some clients pair their protocol with a weekly B12 shot for energy support, or with red light therapy, which is complimentary for members.

Frequently asked questions

Are peptides legal now?

The new HHS policy means federal regulators don’t plan to act against licensed pharmacies and physicians compounding six specific peptides under set conditions, for now. It isn’t an FDA approval, and it can change once the FDA finishes its rulemaking.

Do I need a prescription for peptide therapy?

Yes. At The Bodie Co, peptide therapy is prescribed and supervised by our clinical team after a consultation.

Is it safe to buy peptides online?

We’d advise against it. Products sold online as “research peptides” are not made for human use, and their purity and dose can’t be verified. Supervised therapy with pharmacy-compounded products is a different thing.

How much does peptide therapy cost?

It depends on your protocol. Our Revive membership includes peptide therapy and an optimization plan, and other members receive their tier discount on peptide treatments. See memberships for details.

How quickly will I see results?

Many clients notice better sleep and energy within 2–4 weeks; recovery and body composition changes typically build over 6–8 weeks and beyond. Everyone responds differently.
